Passengers threatened with knife on Berlin tram

A 50-year-old man allegedly threatened passengers with a knife on a stationary tram in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde at about 3:45 p.m. on 16 March. The passengers left the tram. Police had been called to the stop on Am Tierpark street, where the man was also alleged to have damaged tram seats and windows with the knife.

Officers told him to drop the knife and lie on the ground. After they threatened to use a conducted energy device, he lay down but continued to hold the knife. Police took the weapon from him during the arrest. Officers found that he had a serious hand injury, for which he required emergency surgery in hospital. A toxicological examination found that he was under the influence of narcotics. He is being investigated on suspicion of, among other allegations, making threats, dangerous bodily harm and criminal damage.
