Man with knives runs toward police officers in Trier

On 7 February, passers-by in central Trier reported a man carrying a kitchen knife who was approaching and speaking to people. When police officers ordered him to put the knife down in the pedestrian passage between the former Kaufhof and Karstadt department stores, he allegedly made repeated stabbing motions. According to prosecutors, the 34-year-old then produced another large knife and ran toward officers standing only a few metres away. Officers shot him in the legs and foot; he was seriously injured, underwent surgery and received intensive care treatment. Prosecutors are investigating on suspicion of attempted manslaughter because they consider an intended knife attack on the officers more likely than not.
