Man remanded in custody after knife attack at Mannheim sculpture square

A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of a knife attack at the sculpture square outside Mannheim Kunsthalle. Police and prosecutors said he and an unidentified companion had argued with a 31-year-old man on 7 May. After an initial confrontation, the people involved encountered each other again shortly after midnight. The suspect is alleged to have approached the 31-year-old and his companion with a knife and stabbed the 31-year-old at least four times in the back and lumbar area. The victim suffered serious stab wounds, including a lung injury, and required emergency surgery. The suspect was arrested on 19 May, and a warrant on suspicion of attempted homicide in conjunction with dangerous bodily harm was enforced. Investigations are ongoing.
