Police shoot man carrying knife in Hamburg

Police in Hamburg-Farmsen-Berne provisionally detained a man on 20 August after he had allegedly behaved aggressively in a taxi and then got out holding a knife. Officers ordered him to drop the knife near Kupferdamm and Barenkrug. Police said he failed to comply and continued to pose a threat to officers, possible bystanders and himself, so officers shot him in the leg. The man, who also appeared to have self-inflicted cuts, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital. The state criminal police and public prosecutors are investigating, while an internal investigations unit is reviewing the police use of firearms.
