Man threatens police officers in Göttingen with utility knife

A 53-year-old police officer was injured as officers restrained a 54-year-old man after he threatened them with a knife at Göttingen’s Waageplatz. She required medical treatment and remains unfit for duty; the report does not attribute her injury to the knife. During a check in the Waageplatz/Robert-Gernhardt-Platz area on Monday, 21 September 2026, at about 13:30, the man pulled out a utility knife, locked its blade and pointed it at the officers. He dropped the knife after repeated orders and a warning that force would be used. Officers brought him to the ground and detained him; he resisted being restrained. They also found marijuana and additional utility-knife blades. Following indications of alcohol and other intoxicants, a blood sample was ordered, and a court upheld his custody until late evening. Investigations, including into suspected threats and resistance, are ongoing.
