28-year-old man suffers life-threatening injuries in Gießen attack

A 28-year-old man suffered a life-threatening stab injury to his lung in an attack at Kirchenplatz in Gießen during the New Year's Eve night. He had been walking with a female friend at about 03:30 on New Year's morning when a group of three to five people fired New Year's rockets at them. When he confronted the group, police said he was attacked and shortly afterwards collapsed with a bleeding chest wound. He was no longer in danger after surgery. The people involved fled, while prosecutors and criminal police are investigating on suspicion of attempted homicide.
