Two people suffered life-threatening injuries in a knife attack during a violent altercation between two groups of young people in Gelsenkirchen's municipal park on the evening of 25 January. One minor required emergency surgery; after initial treatment, both injured people were taken to hospitals and were later reported to be in stable condition. Two suspects aged 18 and 19 were arrested after initially fleeing, while another 18-year-old suspect later went to a police station. All three suspects were released on 26 January on the instructions of the public prosecutor's office. A homicide unit is investigating the background to the incident.
