Man attempts to injure passer-by with knife in Frankenthal

A 53-year-old man is alleged to have attacked a 54-year-old man repeatedly with a knife on Wormser Straße in Frankenthal (Pfalz) on 3 January. Police and prosecutors said he tried to injure the man in the street, but the intended victim was able to fend off the attack. The assailant only stopped and fled after an uninvolved person intervened. Police provisionally arrested the suspect shortly afterwards. The following day, a judge issued a placement order, including on urgent suspicion of attempted manslaughter, and the man was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Investigations into the background and exact circumstances are continuing.
