Man seriously injured with stabbing weapon at Essen Christmas market

A 34-year-old man was seriously injured with a stabbing weapon at the Christmas market on Willy-Brandt-Platz in Essen on Monday evening. He had been standing with acquaintances at a mulled-wine stall when the group became involved in a dispute with an unknown man. The victim noticed the injury only later and then went to hospital. Doctors could not rule out a life-threatening condition. The suspect allegedly fled with another man. Police established a homicide unit under the direction of prosecutors and are seeking witnesses.
