44-year-old critically injured in stabbing attack in Essen
An unknown man is alleged to have attacked a 44-year-old man from behind with a stabbing weapon at the Goldschmidtstraße bus stop on Engelbertstraße in Essen on 5 September. The attacker fled. The injured man initially remained at the stop for several hours before later taking a bus towards Gelsenkirchen. At the terminus in Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen, the bus driver called emergency services after the man could no longer stand up independently because of increasing back pain. Hospital examinations found a life-threatening stab wound to his back, and his condition stabilised after surgery. A homicide investigation unit is investigating and seeking witnesses.
