Trial begins over fatal stabbing in Hessisch Lichtenau
Proceedings to determine possible psychiatric confinement have begun at the regional court in Kassel against a 24-year-old man. After a dispute in the communal kitchen of accommodation in Hessisch Lichtenau on the evening of 24 March 2026, he allegedly stabbed a 27-year-old man twice in the back with a knife. When the injured man tried to flee outside, the accused allegedly caught up with him on an adjacent lawn and stabbed him repeatedly again. The 27-year-old died at the scene. The accused initially fled but was caught shortly afterwards; he is provisionally held in a psychiatric hospital. According to the prosecution, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and probably acted without criminal responsibility. The court is considering whether permanent psychiatric confinement is warranted.
