Man attempts to stab traveller with machete at Essen central station
On Thursday evening, a 41-year-old man allegedly pulled a machete from his backpack and stabbed towards a traveller after a verbal argument at Essen central station. Federal police ordered him to drop the machete while threatening to use their firearms. He lowered the machete, later threw it over a railing towards the underground station area, and was arrested. Nobody was injured, while the traveller fled before officers arrived. The machete was seized. Investigators opened proceedings including on suspicion of dangerous bodily harm and making threats, and the suspect was due to be brought before a magistrate.
