Man attacks police officer with knife at Erlangen hospital

During a police operation in the emergency department of Erlangen’s Waldkrankenhaus, a 35-year-old man allegedly first used pepper spray against a 32-year-old police officer and then attacked her with a knife. A 25-year-old police officer then fired at the man. The officer was uninjured, while the policewoman was reported to be well again after outpatient treatment. The man sustained a thigh injury, received medical treatment at the hospital, and was not in life-threatening condition, police said.

Police had been called at around 00:45 after the man appeared confused in the emergency department and said he had been poisoned. The emergency department was temporarily closed while evidence was secured. Prosecutors applied for the man’s detention on suspicion of attempted manslaughter, while the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation into the firearm use.
